What..another SL blog???

Welcome to my SL blog - yes another SL blog but hey, why not?


You may or may not be familiar with SL - Second Life. It's an on -line virtual world. Some call it a 'game', but most 'residents' say it most certainly is not. You could see it really as a visual interactive, communication tool. It isn't a game in the sense of World of Warcraft - there are no missions to complete, monsters to fight, or levels to attain. It's more like..well...a second life!

If you have heard of Second Life you may have heard some negative things...sex..porn..gambling(pretty non-existent now since laws were changed), and yes, you can find those things there if that is what you want. It is very much like real life - you find what you are interested in. If you don't want those things, then you needn't go to the places that have them. You needn't ever come in contact with them.

So what can you do there if it's not a 'game' I hear you ask?

Well, alot of things you would do with people in real life, or on your own -here's a little list

• Create/view art - loads of galleries and installtions to see.
• Build vehicles, buildings - or anything your imagination can.
• Scripting.
• Form social groups (about anything you like)Raise awareness of real life issues, political, health, rights, whatever your cause is.
• Educate - there are numerous classes from computer based subjects,psychology, spiritual topics, to languages.
• Take a class...(see the above).
• Hold/attend discussion groups (about anything you are interested in).
• Go shopping (yeah, always fun!).
• Have a (virtual) baby (um..don't know much about that one...).
• Have a business and make some money (no...its' not easy).

Many real world organizations, educational institutions, businesses have their own land there where they educate/discuss/ or just bring to resident's attention what they are all about in real life. It can be used for real life business meetings.
So as you see, it can be seen more as a virtual communication tool than a game. That's not to say you won't have fun too! Many people build the most beautiful places to see, create things to do, you can meet new people from all over the world, people with similar interests that you might just not have the opportunity to in the real world where you live. At the end of the day, it's a lot like real life in that it's what you make of it:)

My main interests in SL are the arts and the many beautiful places to explore -so I'm gonna let you know a little more about that over time. Some are only in existence for a short time, so I hope to provide a permanent record of them here. You can also find photography of the places I find on my travels on my Flickr Gallery . Maybe you'll be tempted to visit some of them, and maybe I'll see you there!
