Second Life 16th Birthday Celebration Events (SLB16) Review Pt. 2

Today I made another attempt to explore the Second Life 16th Birthday event, and glad I did as there is just so much fun stuff to see!

It was somewhat less laggy than yesterday, probably as I went in at a less busy time, but there was still a bit of lag making movement slow. I started of trying to visit the  SL16B official shopping event which is  4 regions filled with various Second Life merchants, plus free gifts and discounts. This of course is very popular so despite trying to go at what I thought would be a quieter time, it was so laggy it was a real pain to move around. However as it's only the second day of the event it might be a bit emptier of avatars later in the week, so I'll probably try again later.

So I spent most of my time today at the main event Sim. This is divided up between exhibits and events by Linden Lab (the larger areas in the center and right of the map below), and exhibits by the Second Life community (the smaller grid areas on the left in the map).

I was pleased to find a pod that toured around the whole event (if you see yesterday's post you'll know I had problems with this initially) and it's well worth it. As you pass the various exhibits by the community a brief description about it comes up in the chat window. I wasn't able to tour the whole Sim in one go today but I did see a few interesting things.

On the Enchant is an exhibit by Linden Lab called the SL16B Tapestry of Time:

Inside is a retrospective of Second Life from it's launch in 2003 to 2019. For each year there is a summary of the major developments or events, together with a video from that year relating to these which you can play inworld or get a link to play it in your chosen browser.

I found it really interesting, as although I've been a member of Second Life since 2006 many of these events passed me by! It's kind of nostalgic to read about these past events, as well as interesting to note the developments since it's inception in 2003:
Facts from Second Life 2003

There was some kind of time capsule too which you could add a notecard to but I couldn't stay long enough to figure out how exactly to do it (wasn't a straightforward click and send).

I particularly like the Magnificent region, there were some fun installations like this interactive board game:

This ariel view shows just how big one region is, filled with so much to see!

What I love about all the event is that there is a good mix of fun, whimsical, historical and educational exhibits to see.  In the Sparkle region the colourful  'The fabulous 50's' by Fran Gustav caught my eye, displaying little billboards with images of various aspects of 1950's life such as politics, culture and fashion, complete with 1950s room and cute food items on top of the whole display:

Next door to that was the cutest little park by Huntress Cataneo which as someone who loves parks and nature in SL, I just had to stop by. It's full of colourful flowers, mushrooms, and animals:

Across the way I next found a wonderful replica of the UN building, complete with all the flags, King Kong scaling the tower, and some information about the UN:

So you can see, there's something to suite a lot of different tastes and this post only cover a tiny amount of what is there to see! I wish I had time to take more photos and post more, but then you wouldn't need to go see it:) I thoroughly recommend making some time to explore even part of the whole event. It's on until 8 July so there's still time!
