POD Riding at SL17B, 2020

It's that time of year again! Time to celebrate Second Life's Birthday. This year sees the 17th year of Second Life on the web.

As usual, the celebrations are taking place across multiple connected regions and feature numerous events from 19th June to 12th July. The event kicked of yesterday with an opening address by Patch Linden, which I thought was a very considerate and mindful of the events and issues we are currently seeing in the world at large. You can catch the speech in the YouTube video at the end of this post.

I love attending SL Birthday events. My favourite pastime is to visit the exhibitor events. These can range from exhibitions, installations, to showcasing information from inworld groups and charities. There is always so much to see, and because of that I find the best way to get a flavour for what's on, and give me an idea what I would like to take my time to visit first, is by taking a POD ride around the regions first.  YavaScript PODs have been in Second Life for many many years, and they have a POD station on Magnificent where you can start your ride (there's an inworld group you can join too). What I love about these is it gives you a little summary about each exhibit as you ride by and let's you know where you are. It's a fantastic way to get an overview of all there is to see.

Just grab a drink, hop on board, and relax....

The landscaping was beautifully done this year, with the same theme as some of the Bellisseria regions, so lots of grass, trees, flowers, dirt roads.

As well as exhibits to explore there is the music fest, Swaginator hunt, and Shop and Hop, with multiple regions of shopping heaven for those who like to. If you are after some free swag, well you can find that too at the Gifting Area which has an array of booths offering free gifts from a variety of Second Life vendors. This area seems to be constantly busy, no surprise:)

The Tapestry of Time is featured again, which I loved last year (read more in this post). If you would like to know a bit more about the development of Second Life over the years I thoroughly recommend it.

Another feature I love are the 'Meet the Lindens' interviews. These will be held throughout the week next week and will feature Ebbe Linden, Patch Linden, and of course the Moles. Topics such as general roadmaps for SL, new home themes and other developments have been discussed in the past, so they are generally really interesting, and are usually packed (so get there early!).  If you can't get inworld they will probably be recorded and available on Second Life's Youtube channel afterwards, so you can catch up there.

You'll find teleporters dotted around the regions to help you get about, as well as the PODs, but there are also a number of pages online with all the information about what's on during the event.

If you love exploring, music or shopping, it's a great annual event, so don't miss it!  I've listed the main information pages below, which are useful to find the events or just ensure you don't miss out on anything.
